Monsoon-Proofing Your Laptop and PC: A Mumbai Survival Guide

Humidity, power cuts and the occasional soaked backpack: Mumbai's monsoon is hard on electronics. Here's how to protect your laptop and desktop before, during and after the rains.

Every year from June to September, our repair desk sees the same set of problems: laptops that won’t power on after a wet commute, desktops with corroded ports, and machines killed by voltage fluctuations. Almost all of them were preventable.

Here’s what we recommend to every customer before the rains arrive.

Before the monsoon

Get a proper bag. A water-resistant laptop sleeve inside a backpack with a rain cover is the single best investment you can make. Many “water-resistant” backpacks still let water in through the zips.

Install a UPS or at least a spike guard. Monsoon season brings frequent voltage dips and surges. A UPS protects a desktop from sudden shutdowns (which can corrupt data) and from surges (which can kill a power supply or motherboard). For laptops, a good-quality surge protector on the charger is the minimum.

Back up everything. If you only take one step from this guide, take this one. Use an external drive, a cloud service, or both. Hardware can usually be repaired; lost data often can’t.

Get a dust-and-thermal clean-up. Dust absorbs moisture. A clean machine with fresh thermal paste runs cooler and is far less likely to fail when humidity peaks.

During the monsoon

  • Keep machines powered on regularly. A computer that runs every day generates enough heat to keep internal humidity in check. Machines left switched off for weeks in a damp room are the ones that develop corrosion.
  • Use silica gel packs in your laptop bag and in any cupboard where you store electronics. Replace or dry them out when they change colour.
  • Avoid moving straight from AC to humid outdoor air with a laptop running. Condensation can form inside. Let it shut down and cool first.
  • Keep desktops off the floor. Even a small leak or mopped floor can reach a tower on the ground.
  • Unplug during heavy thunderstorms if you don’t have surge protection.

If your laptop gets wet

Speed matters more than anything else. Do these things in this order:

  1. Switch it off immediately. Hold the power button. Don’t wait for Windows to shut down.
  2. Unplug the charger and remove any accessories.
  3. Do not switch it back on to “check”. This is the step that turns a repairable laptop into a dead one. Power running through wet circuits causes short circuits and corrosion.
  4. Open it into a tent shape (upside-down V) so liquid drains away from the keyboard.
  5. Skip the rice and the hair dryer. Rice doesn’t reach the inside, and hot air can push water deeper or warp components.
  6. Bring it to a technician as soon as possible. The board needs to be opened, cleaned with isopropyl alcohol and dried properly. The sooner this happens, the better the chance of a full recovery.

After the monsoon

Once the rains end, a quick check-up is worth it: inspect ports for green or white corrosion, check the battery for swelling, and run a disk health check. Catching a failing drive early means you can copy your data off before it dies.
